Greetings everyone! I am Chandra Maracle and I am your host here in Ohswe:ken, Six Nations of the Grand River Territory. I was born and raised in Buffalo, New York. My mother’s mother was Sicilian-American and my mother’s father was German-American. Both of my father’s parents were Kanien’keha:ka from Kenhte:ke, Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory. My partner Rick and I have lived together at Six Nations for 15 years. I have 4 daughters, Kiera, Olivia, Francesca and Vyolette.

Six Nations is a unique and diverse place in that there are people from all six of the nations of the Haudenosaunee (Rotinonhsyon:ni, Iroquois, Six Nations) Confederacy living here: Kanien’kehaka (Mohawk), Onyotea:ka (Oneida), Onondage’aka (Onondaga), Gayogho:no (Cayuga), Onondowa’ga (Seneca) and Skaru:re (Tuscarora). This territory is a result of the compensation for allyship to the British Loyalists in the American Revolutionary War. The original territories and homelands are mostly within New York State.

My Passion with Food

I have been a foodie and health food junkie for as long as I can remember. I am founder of Kakhwa’on:we/Real People Eat Real Food and co-founder of Skaronhyase’ko:wa/The Everlasting Tree School where I initiated our school Nutrition program, Tyonhekhwen Onkwaya’tekenha:tshera. I am currently a Phd student at York University in the Faculty of Environmental Studies. My work here is focused on Haudenosaunee food history and Eating Psychology.

My Perspective on Food Sovereignty

Food sovereignty is being in control of what is on the end of your fork (or however it is that you eat your food). That includes knowledge about and access to what it is that should be on the end of your fork. Freedom of choice is not enough. It includes support while in recovery from food related trauma and trauma that is being played out through food.

My Participation in the Legacies Project

I am connected to the Legacies Project as a fortunate person to have met Deb Barndt a few years ago. We immediately connected through love of food, culture and community.
